During the winter months, you may notice that new oral health issues like dry mouth, chapped lips, and sensitive teeth are beginning to develop. Keeping winter mouth issues in Carmel under control is a key part of enjoying the season of joy, wonder, and warmth to the fullest. Read on to learn about five ways you can fight back against the elements and prevent complications from developing for a healthier, happier mouth.

Tip #1: Drink Water

Xerostomia, which is more commonly known as dry mouth, occurs when there isn’t enough saliva being produced. Though there are many causes of dry mouth, a few common ones include chemotherapy, radiation, and certain kinds of medication. The dryness of winter air can worsen this and allow harmful oral bacteria to thrive and attack your tooth enamel. To combat this, make sure to drink lots of water throughout the day so your mouth stays moist. Additionally, this will keep your skin hydrated and prevent chapped lips.

Tip #2: Stay Warm

Muscles and joints tend to tense up more in colder weather. If you have TMJ issues, this can cause additional tightness or discomfort. Make sure to bundle up and stay warm to minimize jaw pain and reduce tightening or clenching of the jaw.

Tip #3: Wear Lip Balm

When temperatures drop, this can cause the delicate skin on your lips to dry out and become chapped. Use a lip balm that contains SPF to make sure they stay well moisturized and protected from the dry weather.

Tip #4: Use a Humidifier

During the winter months, the air is less humid. This causes our skin to become dry and more fragile than usual. By using a humidifier, you’ll be adding moisture back into the air in your home to keep your skin and lips healthy and crack-free.

Tip #5: Pick the Right Toothpaste

Cold temperatures can sometimes leave your teeth feeling uncomfortable, so some people experience increases tooth sensitivity during this time in the form of short, sharp bursts of pain. This can also occur when drinking hot beverages. Use desensitizing toothpaste to protect your teeth from harm and alleviate discomfort.

Make sure to follow the above tips to keep your mouth and skin healthy and damage-free this winter. By doing so, you’ll be able to avoid developing oral health issues so you can enjoy the season to the fullest!
